THE HISTORY
The history of Rajasthan dates back to the ancient times, with the Indus Valley Civilization having a presence in the region around 2500 BCE. The Rajputs, a warrior clan of Hindu origin, rose to power in the 8th century and established a number of small kingdoms in the region. These kingdoms fought amongst themselves as well as against the Islamic Delhi Sultanate and the Mughal Empire, who controlled large parts of India at the time.
During the 16th and 17th centuries, the Rajputs formed alliances with the Mughals and several Rajput princes held high positions in the Mughal court. However, Rajput resistance to Mughal rule continued and by the 18th century, the Rajput kingdoms had gained autonomy.
In the 19th century, British controlled Rajaputana and it became the present state of Rajasthan after Indian independence in 1947 – now known for its rich cultural heritage including forts, palaces, temples and traditional art and architecture.
